Formation (The
MCC Club XIs Competition)
In an early history of the Club, set out in the 1934 edition of “The Xaverian”, it was reported that following the 1300 notices of or invitations to the inaugural meeting of the proposed Club on 8 September 1926, there were only 15 attendees including Rev. Father O’Keefe, S.J., Frank O’Halloran (who kept the minutes), H.G. Schrader (President of the O.X.A. and chairman of the meeting), J. Batchelor, Tim Collins, Maurice Collins, R.Cudmore, M. Hallisey, W. Hartung, (?) Hyland, Harold Mortensen, C. Murphy, T. O’Keefe, Jock Stanley and J. Williamson. It is not reported but presumably other meetings took place because the office bearers named for the upcoming season included persons other than the above.
Excerpt from “The Xaverian” 1926:
"The Old Xaverians were asked to enter a competition
consisting of teams from the Past of the four Melbourne
Public Schools and four M.C.C. teams (“A” “D”). The
Old Wesley Collegians were unable to secure their school
ground and so could not take part. The Old Xaverians
met at the City Club Hotel, and formed a Club."
Reporting the recruitment of immediate past students
over the Christmas vacation, "The Xaverian"
went on to note that "as one of the reasons for
the formation of the competition in which the Club takes
part is to enable boys who were members of the School
teams to continue their cricket until such time as they
can qualify for positions in higher grade teams, it
is very satisfactory indeed to be able to chronicle
this"
The organizers of the competition decided against playing
for a premiership in its first year.
